The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.
The former head of state was convicted of planning a government overthrow in September and given more than a 27-year term in jail, but he remained under house arrest pending legal challenges.
High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after fresh information were revealed.
This encompassed trying to remove his ankle monitor and a summons to a demonstration that could "allow for a potential flight.
Court Filing Details Escape Risks
In a paperwork permitting the detention, the magistrate said intelligence from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's "intention to break the tracking monitor to ensure success in his flight.
This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the protest called by his son.
His son, his son Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a meeting of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.
The senator wrote on social media on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or watch it all from your phone there on your sofa? I urge you to struggle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so backers could "pray for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of the judge's ruling was the potential of Bolsonaro's move to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the investigations revealed a background of planning to request asylum through a consular facility", a statement said.
The legal document underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is positioned around 8 miles from the former president's residence.
International Reactions
Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow conservative nationalist American leader Donald Trump, leading him to impose a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.
Bolsonaro is being held in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will have a imprisonment assessment on Sunday.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with digital surveillance.
They also requested that Bolsonaro be allowed to depart his residence for medical care, saying he required frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other illnesses.
Background on Conviction
He was determined responsible of heading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the national vote to his political opponent, Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plan which involved plans to kill the current president and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing the former president's case.
The plot was stopped because it didn't receive the endorsement of the armed forces officials. The current president was inaugurated without problem on January 1st, 2023.
But a week later, on the eighth of January, thousands of his followers invaded and destroyed public facilities in the capital, Brazil's capital.
The law enforcement took action and around 1,500 people were detained.
The justices found that the protesters had been incited by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to take action, reestablish control and bring him back to power.
At the moment, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.
He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years later after the end of his sentence.
The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him participating in the 2026 national vote.
